The ANSI Safety Standards

Safety Standards for Mechanical Power Transmission Apparatus is ANSI/ASME B15.1-1984.
Safety Standards Conveyors and Related Equipment is ANSI/ASME B20.1-1990.

These safety standards instructions are for work on chains, sprockets, and other power transmission sources.

  1. Safety guards must be provided on all chains, sprockets, and other moving parts to prevent worker injury.
  2. Always lock out the power switch and tag out the machine before installing, removing, lubricating, or servicing a chain system.
  3. When connecting or disconnecting the chain;
    a. Eye protection is required. Wear safety glasses, protective clothing, gloves, and safety shoes.
    b. If the chain is used in long length then support the chain to prevent uncontrolled movement.
    c. Use of pressing equipment is recommended. All tools must be in good condition and use them properly.
    d. Determine the correct direction for pin/rivet removal or insertion.
